Best Tattoo Needles for Coloring

The needles used in tattooing are specially made for tattooing. Several different types are available and they each are made for differing purposes. Most tattoo machines actually use groups of needles rather than single needles. Even fine lining around tattoos use groups of very fine needles called sharps. Different needle formations are used for lining and shading. Used needles are considered a biohazard and must be disposed of properly to decrease the possibility of spreading disease.

Needles for tattoos can be constructed in groups of 3, 5, 7, or more. The number of needles depends upon how experienced the artist is and their preferences. Single needles are rarely used but when they are, it is for extremely fine outlining work. Most outlining work is done with a set of tattoo needles that are in arranged in a circle. This makes for even edging. Shading needle groups are in a line. How many needles there are in the line depends upon the artist. Larger shaders inject more ink in a larger area and make the work go faster. But this is only suitable if the design allows for large areas to be shaded with the same color ink.

Sharps for a tattoo machine are soldered to a small metal bar and then inserted into the machine through a tube. Tattoo needles must be changed frequently, at least between customers. Some artists sterilize their needles between uses. This is done by cleaning the needles with special solutions. The needles are then placed in an autoclave for sterilization. Most artists use single use needles now so there is no need for sterilization. Single use needles come already sterile in a sealed pouch. These decrease risk of contamination and are much less work than autoclave methods.

When it comes time to dispose of used tattoo needles, they must be handled carefully. Biohazards such as used needles cannot be thrown away in any old trash can. By law they must be discarded in a well marked and sealed container. Sharps containers are usually red and clearly marked as hazardous waste. The container can be used until it is full, then the whole thing is thrown away. It is not just sharps that are a biohazard in the tattoo studio. Anything that has come in contact with bodily fluids must be treated in the same way. This includes gloves, leftover ointment, towels, plastic covers, ink and ink caps, cotton swabs, etc.
